Candlelight Vigil

January 10, 2017 - 7 p.m.

On this day, 100 years ago, one of America's greatest frontier legends, Buffalo Bill Cody, passed away. He was eventually laid to rest atop Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado. The Museum will remain open until 7 p.m. as a place to gather prior to the procession to the grave. Join us graveside for a candlelight vigil, followed by hot chocolate and comradely in the Pahaska Tepee Gift Shop.

Remembering Buffalo Bill

Before he was buried on Lookout Mountain, Cody’s body was held at Olinger’s Mortuary, current site of the Lola's.  We will hold a wake in the Lola bar from 4 pm to 7 pm followed by a special 5 course dinner with brief talks about Buffalo Bill.   Reservations are required for the dinner, which has spaces for only 30 persons.

Wild West Show

“Buffalo Bill” Cody founded a Wild West show that performed throughout the United States and Europe. The new technology of motion picture cameras captured the drama of this time period and influenced a whole new movie genre: the Western. Reflect on the 100th anniversary of Buffalo Bill’s death with a display of authentic Western movie posters and artwork, dialogue about diversity in the West.

Buffalo Bill, through his show and other activities, has made an indelible imprint upon American history and culture. While Buffalo Bill’s Wild West was based upon Cody’s own experiences growing up in the American West, he advocated for Native American and Women’s equal rights and both were featured prominently in the Wild West. The show eventually turned into an international affair, employing performers from every continent (except Antarctica).
